Up From the Stacks
Cartoonist Ben Katchor and composer Mark Mulcahy present their new multimedia pop opera. Set in the 1970s, Up from the Stacks is the story of Lincoln Cabinee, a part-time page who, while retrieving books from the New York Public Library, unwittingly becomes embroiled in the amusement and vice flourishing in Times Square.

Obie Award-winner Ben Katchor was the first cartoonist to receive a MacArthur Fellowship. He also received a Guggenheim Fellowship and is a fellow of the American Academy in Berlin.
Tickets: $35 - $48

Performance Art and Conversation
Miranda July in The Auction with Peter Stein
Miranda July, idiosyncratic writer, filmmaker and performance artist, is best known for her quirky films Me and You and Everyone We Know and, most recently, The Future. In her interactive performance piece, The Auction, July draws on her latest book It Chooses You, in which personal items become the vehicle for exploring the richness of people's lives.

Just for fun, July began interviewing people who had placed ads in The PennySaver. The captivatingly original result, It Chooses You, became a semi-documentary memoir in which July affectionately celebrates the upside of eccentricity. It Chooses You was one of Oprah’s three “Can’t Miss Books of December 2011.”
Tickets: $10 - $40

Both Performances at Kanbar Hall, Jewish Community Center of San Francisco (JCCSF)
3200 California Street
Box Office: 415/292-1233 or www.jccsf.org/arts
