While these two music legends have played together since the inception of the Grateful Dead in 1965, they have appeared jointly infrequently since 2015's Fare Thee Well shows, where they played for the last time with all four surviving members of the Dead. They have never performed as a duo without a backing band.
This new project came about as Weir and Lesh celebrated the 40-year anniversary of the Grateful Dead's 1977 studio album Terrapin Station. The two performed at Lesh's own Terrapin Crossroads, as well as Lockn' Festival andSound Summit on Mount Tamalpais earlier this year. Fans can expect to hear Grateful Dead favorites as well as additional musical surprises. NYC-based independent promoter, Peter Shapiro will present the shows and has collaborated with Lesh and Weir for the past twenty years at his Capitol Theatre and Brooklyn Bowl venues, his own LOCKN' Festival, and the acclaimed 2015 Fare Thee Well shows.
Weir explains the upcoming project, "I guess it was last summer, Phil and I played a little duo show....we had enough fun so we figured hey lets do this, lets make a little go of this." While Lesh says "Playing with Bob always brings me great joy. The intuitive playing that we have developed over five decades of creating music together always leads to new realms of musical experience, something that I find especially exciting, and I think that fans of our music will enjoy this new format as much as I do."
About Bob Weir:
Over the last 50 years, Bob Weir has established himself as one of rock's finest and most distinctive rhythm guitarists. He is a founding member of the legendary Grateful Dead, a Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame inductee and a GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award recipient in 2007. Weir has performed alongside many acts including The Other Ones, Kingfish, Bob Weir Band, Bobby and the Midnites, Scaring the Children, Ratdog and Furthur (co-led by Phil Lesh). Weir is currently a member of Dead & Company, which features Grateful Dead members Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann along with GRAMMY-winner John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti.
In 2016 he received the inaugural Les Paul Spirit Award and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association. Also in 2016, Weir released Blue Mountain on Columbia/Legacy/ROAR, his first album of solo material in more than 10 years and his first album of entirely original material in more than 30 years. The album received raves from critics including NPR who called the LP "stately, autumnal, metaphysical cowboy songs."
Weir was the subject of the 2015 Netflix documentary The Other One: The Long Strange Trip of Bob Weir which chronicles his storied career.
About Phil Lesh: Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame inductee and GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement-awarded bassist Phil Lesh has kept busy in the decades following the Grateful Dead. Lesh began playing under the moniker Phil Lesh and Friends in 1998, after he returned to performing following the death of his friend and band mate Jerry Garcia. He appears regularly at his own venue, Terrapin Crossroads, in San Rafael, CA as well as continuing a residency at the Capitol Theater in New York and his annual performances at the Lockn' Festival in Arrington, VA. Recently, Phil has been touring with Phil Lesh & the Terrapin Family Band, playing select concert halls as a part of the musical journey with the next generation of talented musicians.
