Rapsody Releases Fifth Studio Album GOD GOTTA AFRO & GOLD HOOPS

Grammy Award-winning musician Rapsody has released God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops, her fifth studio album and, according to the announcement, one of the most expressive releases in her catalog to date. Out now via We Each Other / Roc Nation Distribution, the 16-track project was largely written and recorded in Africa, drawing from a musical landscape shaped by ancestry, spirituality, and cultural pride. The album features appearances from Malice, the Godfather of Funk, George Clinton, and many more, with legendary D12 producer Denaun Porter (a.k.a. Mr. Porter) serving as executive producer.

Speaking about the new album, Rapsody shares: 'This album is reverence, reclamation, and cosmic significance in motion. Mr. Porter and I, along with an outstanding supporting cast, set out to celebrate and shine light on my continued evolution as an artist that still had so much to show and give, as well as create something black as s to celebrate every part of our beauty – mind, spirit and body, as a people. This is what it sounds like when God's children see the creator in their reflection. It looks like love.'

Conceived during a transformative trip in 2025, the album provides listeners with a snapshot of Rapsody's evolving identity and her place within the world. A conceptual body of work from start to finish, God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops feels expansive and intentional, unfolding as an affirmation. Much of the project originated during sessions in Johannesburg, where Rapsody worked closely with longtime collaborator Mr. Porter, who helped shape the album's sound and produced its lead single, 'God Gotta Afro,' featuring Karabo Ya Morena.

From the tenderness of 'Apple Juice' and the fearless vulnerability of 'Black Love,' featuring Malice, to the introspective honesty of 'Abandoned Me,' featuring Mr. Porter, Rapsody crafts an immersive soundscape grounded in deeply personal storytelling. The rest of the album takes shape as a powerful meditation on Black identity and spirituality – a reminder to see God in our own reflection.

Rapsody extended the album's themes beyond music. Through a collaboration with Black-owned jewelry brand Simone I. Smith, she transformed the project's celebration of Black womanhood into wearable art. The centerpiece of the collection, inspired directly by God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops, is the Raveen Hoops, whose design incorporates an Afro pick and a woman's silhouette. Rapsody says each element carries its own meaning: the 'hoop' represents an heirloom, the 'Afro pick' represents language, and the woman's silhouette represents the divinity, beauty, and power of Black womanhood.

With God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops, the Snow Hill native steps into a place of reclamation — of her voice, her identity, and a deeper connection to the woman she has become. If Please Don't Cry revealed a more personal, unguarded side of Rapsody, the new record feels like a celebration of what she found in that state of introspection.

About Rapsody

For more than a decade, Grammy winner Rapsody has occupied a singular space in hip-hop. It is one built not on trends, algorithms, or industry expectations, but on truth. Through acclaimed projects including The Idea of Beautiful, Laila's Wisdom, EVE, and Please Don't Cry, the lyricist has established herself as one of the most important voices of her generation, earning the respect of peers, critics, and fans alike through an unwavering commitment to authenticity. She has built her reputation as one of hip-hop's most thoughtful defenders of the culture as an artist focused on lyricism, identity, and Black storytelling over trend-driven visibility. Her breakthrough moment came with a feature on Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly, the album's only rap feature from a female MC, placing her inside one of modern hip-hop's most culturally significant works. She's earned more than respect from her contemporary peers, later signing with Roc Nation. Her work has also intersected with civic and cultural spaces, including appearances tied to the Obama-era White House under Barack Obama. And, across her career, she's been consistently aligned with cultural movements and social awareness in hip-hop, earning recognition more through respect and impact than awards. She has nothing left to prove but plenty more to say. Now, Rapsody enters her boldest and most expansive chapter yet with God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops, her highly anticipated fifth studio album due Friday, August 21.
