John Carter Cash's Visual Art to Feature in Growing Exhibition Slate

The musician and producer's paintings continue gaining attention beyond his work in music and film.

John Carter Cash, long recognized as a Grammy-winning producer, musician, author and steward of one of American music's most enduring legacies, is now making his mark in another creative medium: visual art.

Following the debut of his first visual art exhibition earlier this year, Cash's paintings are finding their way into new galleries and public spaces, with exhibitions spanning Tennessee and, beginning this month, Delaware.

The growing slate of exhibitions represents another chapter in a creative life that has never been confined to a single medium. From producing records and writing books to songwriting, photography and painting, Cash's work is connected by an instinct for storytelling—whether that story unfolds through sound, words or on canvas.

Earlier this year, Cash introduced audiences to his visual work with 'Dark Hallways,' his first visual art exhibition, at Southern Underground Gallery in Leiper's Fork, Tennessee. The collection explored psychological and emotional spaces through recurring images of hallways, doors, windows, and corridors, using architecture as a metaphor for memory, endurance, isolation, and transition.

Working primarily in oil, Cash combines raw, visible brushwork with layered color and forced perspective, creating works that exist somewhere between abstraction and representation. As he explained of the collection, 'My art is not about the spaces we go through physically, but about those we move through internally.'

Selections from 'Dark Hallways' have since found a new home at The Factory at Franklin, where Cash's work is currently featured on the rotating Factory Gallery Wall outside Liberty Hall. Curated by artist ShenShen in partnership with the Williamson County Arts Council, the exhibition also features work by legendary singer-songwriter and producer Jim Messina and artist Madeline Kiel.

Created in connection with The Factory's 'Red Wheel' songwriter series, the installation celebrates acclaimed musical creators whose artistic expression extends beyond music and into the visual arts.

For Cash, the exhibition also reflects what he sees as a growing appreciation for visual art within the Nashville community. Now, his visual art is expanding beyond Tennessee.

On Aug. 20, John William Gallery in Wilmington, Delaware, presented 'John Carter Cash: Freeform,' Cash's debut solo exhibition at the gallery and a showcase of his newest drawings and paintings. The exhibition will remain on display through Sept. 24 at 1313 North Market Atrium. Curated by Dr. Morgan Joseph Hamilton, Gretchen Hupfel Curator of Contemporary Art at The Delaware Contemporary, 'Freeform' reveals another dimension of Cash's evolving visual language.

The collection ranges from vibrant, heavily textured paintings with thick impasto brushstrokes to quieter works with smoother surfaces and muted palettes. Rather than starting with a predetermined destination, Cash lets each layer inform the next, letting an image emerge through the process of creation.

That freedom is at the heart of 'Freeform'—and increasingly at the heart of his identity as a visual artist.

The exhibitions also reveal the breadth of Cash's work. While 'Dark Hallways' uses repeated architectural forms to examine the internal spaces people move through, 'Freeform' embraces a wider visual vocabulary, moving between color, texture, abstraction, and recognizable imagery.

Together, the bodies of work offer audiences an opportunity to discover another side of an artist whose creative life has long existed beyond conventional boundaries.

Growing up as the son of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash and grandson of Maybelle Carter, Cash has spent much of his life surrounded by artistic expression. Yet while he continues to serve as a caretaker of the Carter-Cash legacy, his expanding body of visual work reflects an artistic voice distinctly his own.

An accomplished producer, musician and author, Cash has produced hundreds of recordings for artists including Loretta Lynn, Elvis Costello, Jamey Johnson, Chris Cornell, George Jones, Jewel, Mavis Staples, Brooks & Dunn, Sheryl Crow, Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson and Reba McEntire. He has earned two Grammy Awards and contributed as a producer, writer or collaborator to six Grammy-winning projects.

Cash continues to expand the canvas of a career built around a simple constant: the desire to create.
