Erin Kamler Releases Pop-Odyssey Album RECKONING

US-born, Thailand-based writer, composer, musician, and researcher Erin Kamler has shared new album RECKONING, which is available now on all streaming platforms.

With orchestrations by renowned musician David Shenton, viola from JJ Johnson, and cello from 7x GRAMMY-Award nominee Dave Eggar, the second album in Kamler's MERIDIAN LINES series is a 12-track celestial pop-odyssey through the illusions of an unraveling United States, as seen through the eyes of an American expat looking back. Loosely inspired by themes of Shakespeare's The Tempest, the album—written and recorded between the United States and Thailand—blends mythic songwriting, soulful performances, and lush instrumentation, inviting listeners to break the spell of artifice and celebrate what's real.

On the album's origins, Kamler shared: 'I sat down at the piano in early 2025, in the wake of the current administration's resumption of power in the US. I was in Los Angeles at the time. The song I wrote, 'Revelry,' was one of desperation—USAID had just been decimated. The livelihoods and lifelines of my friends, colleagues, and thousands of people across Southeast Asia and beyond, were obliterated. Outside, the streets of LA would soon be militarized, our immigrant neighbors tormented. America's soft power, our global reputation built over decades of fragile, painstaking trust-building, was being shattered. When I opened my laptop, chaos and fear seeped through the screen, at turns repellent and hypnotic. My country—we—were at a turning point. And so the music started coming.

Back home in Thailand, several months and 12 songs later, I understood what I was writing.

RECKONING responds to the chaos that's befallen the United States and, by extension, the world. Loosely inspired by themes of Shakespeare's The Tempest, the album is my take on the comeuppance we face as we move through this era of enchantments, dramas, and stormy seas.

In writing these songs, I found myself drawing inspiration from musical genres that, as a member of Generation X, are both personally meaningful and quintessentially American. From the emotional theatricality of 80's pop, to the soulful lyricism of 70's acoustic rock, to the narrative confessionalism of 90's singer-songwriters, to my own Michigan Motown roots, these songs are a tribute to both my culture and generation. They evoke the music that underscored our coming of age as we stood on the threshold between worlds: analog and digital, organic and synthetic, material and virtual. Straddling realities, displaced in time and space—much like where the country finds itself today.'

RECKONING was heralded earlier this month by the album's powerful debut single 'Red Lightning.' With soulful, impassioned vocals, 'Red Lightning' examines the danger of placing your trust in dubious places–and what might compel one to do so. 'No more worries / no more thinking / no more standing on the brink / no more sinking,' croons Kamler. Like a siren song, the ease of a dangerous voice calls, luring you into its trap.

In 2025, Kamler shared REFUGE, the first offering in her MERIDIAN LINES series. A meditation on the places and spaces that give us comfort in times of conflict, REFUGE was inspired by Kamler's time in Thailand throughout the Covid pandemic and brings together Buddhist and Hebrew mantras with songs of love and grief.

The 12-track album, written and produced by Kamler, featured intimate piano-vocal melodies, tender performances from members of Kutumba—a folk instrumental ensemble committed to the research, preservation and celebration of indigenous Nepali music—the soulful rhythms of Northern Thailand, and the sweeping sounds of New York City strings from renowned musician David Shenton. A true global endeavor, REFUGE was recorded between Chiang Mai, Thailand, Kathmandu, Nepal, Los Angeles, and New York.

The MERIDIAN LINES series marks Kamler's return to recorded music after her success in the 2000s under the moniker Mantra Girl, whose pop-chant album Truth was praised by Billboard as 'as calming as it is energizing.' The album featured an inspiring collection of ancient Sanskrit-based mantras set to stirring dance rhythms, with instrumentation from members of the New York Philharmonic.

About Meridian Lines

Meridian Lines is a trio of albums about one woman's experience as an American abroad, and what it means to see home through a newfound gaze. With songs spanning across the spiritual, pop, and musical theater genres, performed by musicians from the hills of Northern Thailand to the halls of New York City, Meridian Lines is a celebration of liminality— of the 'edge of the world' as a site of reflection, transformation, and repair.
