RBC Emerging Artist Apprentice Award Winners Announced

Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada announced today that Corps de Ballet members Hannah Galway and Alexander Skinner are the winners of the sixth annual RBC Emerging Artist Apprentice Award for their performances as Apprentices during the 2017/18 season. Ms. Galway and Mr. Skinner each received a $1,000 cash prize. The awards were presented in Toronto this evening by Artistic Director, YOU dance / Principal Ballet Master Lindsay Fischer and Flora Do, VP, Strategy and Client Insights, RBC Wealth Management, during the Patrons' Council 2018/19 season opening party.
Ms. Galway was born in Comox, British Columbia and trained at Canada's National Ballet School. She joined the National Ballet as a RBC Apprentice in 2017 and became a member of the Corps de Ballet in 2018. Ms. Galway's repertoire with the company includes The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker and Paz de la Jolla.
Mr. Skinner was born in Ottawa, Ontario and trained at The School of Dance in Ottawa, and Canada's National Ballet School. In 2017, he joined the National Ballet as a RBC Apprentice and in 2018 became a member of the Corps de Ballet. Mr. Skinner's repertoire includes Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Nijinsky, The Winter's Tale and A Streetcar Named Desire.
Established in 2012, the RBC Emerging Artist Apprentice Award recognizes members of the National Ballet's Apprentice Programme for their artistic growth, professional development and exceptional talent. The award recipients are chosen by a selection committee made up of members of the National Ballet's artistic staff.
Ms. Galway and Mr. Skinner will travel with the National Ballet for the company's upcoming tour to Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia October 15 - 19, 2018, as part of Diana Vishneva's Context festival. The company will perform a mixed programme of Being and Nothingness by Guillaume Côté, Paz de la Jolla by Justin Peck, and Crystal Pite's Emergence at the Stanislavsky Theatre in Moscow (October 15 and 16) and the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg (October 19).

Both award winners will appear with the company onstage during the Fall Season which opens with the North American premiere of Anna Karenina choreographed by John Neumeier, November 10 - 18, 2018. Based on Leo Tolstoy's great masterwork, Anna Karenina is the first cooperation between the National Ballet, The Hamburg Ballet and The Bolshoi Ballet.
