The Ahn Trio Joins With UF Professors For A Premiere Performance

The Ahn Trio will join forces with two acclaimed musicians and UF professors in a world-premiere performance Saturday, February 27 at University Auditorium.

An Evening of BraziliAHN Trio with Special Guests Welson Tremura and Larry Crook is jointly commissioned by University of Florida Performing Arts and the University of Notre Dame's DeBartolo Performing Arts Center. In this innovative presentation, the Ahn sisters (cellist Maria, pianist Lucia and violinist Angella) will interpret the alluring music of Brazil through a classical piano trio.

The program will include selections by legendary Brazilian singer/songwriter Edu Lobo, performed with Welson Tremura lending vocals, an original three-movement work written for the Trio by Brazilian composer/pianist maestro Nelson Ayres, and some Brazilian Popular Music Classics chosen by the Trio.

Born in Seoul, Korea and educated at The Juilliard School in New York City, the members of the Ahn Trio are constantly redefining the art and architecture of chamber music. Breathing new life into the standard piano-trio literature with commissioned works from numerous visionary composers, the Ahn Trio brings a new energy and excitement to the chamber music world. The trio's latest CD, Lullaby for My Favorite Insomniac (Sony), is a showcase of this vibrant and original music, which made No. 8 on the Billboard Charts for 26 weeks in the Classical album category.

Dr. Welson Tremura permanently joined the Center for Latin American Studies in 2002 as an educator who is well-versed in Brazilian Jazz, classical, and vocal music as well as traditional European classical forms also specializes in ethnomusicology (folk religion, technology, and interdisciplinary projects) and world music. Dr. Tremura is also the co-director for Jacaré Brazil (Brazilian music ensemble) where he teaches guitar and vocal repertoires and organizes performances. Dr. Tremura is also the founder and director for the Brazilian Music Institute.

Dr. Larry Crook specializes in ethnomusicology and music history at the University of Florida's School of Music and teaches a variety of courses in Latin American, Caribbean, and African music as well as specialized courses in ethnomusicology. At UF he is Co-Director of the Center for World Arts and an affiliate member of Anthropology and the Centers for Latin American and African Studies. A percussionist, he is Director of the UF World Music Ensembles (Jacaré Brazil and Agbedidi Africa) and gives staged performances regularly.
