Utah Press Announces eBook Release of Cat Memoir

Wayman Publishing considers itself a press with a mission: to help writers realize their dream of being published when they have a life-enhancing story to share and to help readers discover their own hidden depths of kindness.

With this mission in mind, Wayman recently published the eBook of A Cat's Life: Dulcy's Story. Published in hardcover by Crown in 1992, the book touched the lives of thousands of readers who sought the assurance, in a skeptical society, that pets were really family members. At the time, many scoffed at what they termed "sentimental claptrap."

Dee Ready, whose name is on the cover of A Cat's Life, maintains that Dulcy, the cat with whom she lived for seventeen and a half year channeled the book through her over a period of two months.

"The Saturday after her death, I woke and felt compelled to go to my computer," Ready recently explained to Elisa Hirsch, cofounder of Wayman Publishing. "I put my hands on the keyboard and the first words that came-spontaneously-were 'At the end all that matters is love . . . my love for my human and hers for me. I have planted the memories of our life together in her heart. She will find them there when I am gone, and they will comfort her." Ready realized that she hadn't planned these words; they'd been given to her.

Hearing about Dulcy's story, and then later reading it herself, Hirsch offered to give the cat memoir new life as an eBook. "A whole new generation of readers deserve to know this story," Hirsch said as she offered a contract to Ready. Plans are now afoot to turn A Cat's Life: Dulcy's Story into a sound recording, which will be available later this summer. It will be read by the well-known narrator Andrea (Andi) Hicks.

"When Dee's book was published over twenty years ago, many people belittled the relationship between animals and humans," Hirsch explains. "Dulcy's book helped change that attitude."

In its 1992 review of the memoir, the magazine Cat Fancy wrote, "Anyone who has loved and lost a precious feline companion will respond powerfully to Dulcy's final thoughts of tenderness and gratitude for the gifts of her human's love."

"That's still true," Hirsch maintains. "So many new readers are going to be touched by Dulcy and Dee's story. Wayman's delighted to release the eBook to a new generation."
