After his wife was diagnosed with a terminal illness in 1979, Peter Johnston, a family GP, started to look outside conventional medicine for a cure. What he found was a confusing array of different alternative therapies and a medical profession skeptical of all of them. "The Eagle's Way: The Importance of Love in Healthcare" (published by Balboa Press) is Johnston's effort to bring understanding and cohesion to 150 different therapeutic approaches to healthcare.

Readers will be guided by the author as he explores the history, principles and philosophies of alternative medicine and its complementary relationship with conventional medicine. Throughout the book, he looks at how orthodox medicine fights disease while alternative approaches embrace disease. "Both principles are different yet powerful," he says. "Maintenance of scientific standards dictates that most alternative therapies will remain outside the parameters of orthodox medicine but will be complementary to it."

An excerpt from "The Eagle's Way":

"In 1980, I referred three patients to a spiritual healer. One had metastatic cancer, another had rheumatoid arthritis and the third had an incurable lung disease. I had little to offer any of them. While spiritual healing seemed a long shot, there seemed little to lose by trying it. All three patients experienced 'spontaneous remissions.'"

Johnston hopes his book will help readers see medicine in a new light. "The overall theme of the book is holistic healthcare, an introduction to the subject for the general public as well as for health practitioners," he says. "Healthcare is more than disease care and includes ways of thinking and living conducive to maintaining health as well as regaining it."
