LOS ANGELES

Inspired by a sense of futility in politics, author Bruce Dundore created the dystopian cultural satire he presents in his new book, "The Calamities" (published by AuthorHouse), which explores a chaotic future on Earth where much of the world has been destroyed by an unrelenting series of natural and man-made disasters.

John Smith lives among an ignorant and complacent population. After years of weathering catastrophes ranging from plagues to nuclear attacks, John loses his arm to a pack of vicious, hormonally enhanced coyotes. His certainty that his arm will grow back casts him in a light of insanity to everyone around him.

What no one, not even John, seems to realize, however, is that an alien culture, needing the resources of the planet, has sent John to Earth. His mission is to record observations of the inhabitants and ensure that the alien race will not suffer an intolerable fate there.

Praise for "The Calamities":

"Managing to be fun in spite of a bleak storyline, the novel is worthy of comparison to wacky/sad futures such as Gary Shteyngart's 'Super Sad True Love Story' (2011)."
