Motivated by her own diagnosis of triple negative breast cancer in 2013, Sue Mackey wrote "Positive Oncology: An Optimistic Approach to the Big C" (published by Balboa Press AU) to help other people with cancer have a more positive outlook on the outcome.

"There is a lack of information available, from a psychological perspective, to empower individuals to better approach diagnosis, treatment and recovery from cancer," Mackey says.

In her book, Mackey draws on her personal experience with cancer and treatments over two years. She had five months of chemotherapy, a mastectomy, radiotherapy and reconstructive surgery. Mackey says that she was able to draw upon her knowledge of positive psychology and people around her. "Positive Oncology" intertwines her experience with cancer with psychology strategies for positivity, discussion of mind-body connections and various ancient cultures' wisdom to offer a guide designed to enhance coping skills.

"People with cancer feel disempowered to help themselves. Families and friends are always looking for resources to support their loved ones with cancer," Mackey says. "This book provides simple to access strategies to gain control and improve wellbeing during and after cancer."
