The bulk of severe head injury sufferers ranges from 17 to 25 years old. Rick Fernandez wants to spread the message - that brain injury is not irreparable. His latest book release "An Uncharted Desert Isle" (published by AuthorHouse) serves as a roadmap on how he survived and let every person realize it is possible.

He had removed sliding Fiberglas doors from the three-wheel death trap and his head suffered three forceful impacts to the pavement. He lost count after that. He was in the state of coma for 67 days, maintained a high fever, bled internally and acquired pneumonia. He had a compound fracture broken in two locations on the femur bone, protruding outside his skin.

"I am a walking testament as to what determination can do. I could never have done it without the faith of others. More importantly, I had faith in myself," Fernandez says.

Right from the beginning of his rehabilitation, he finds joy due to the fact that his disability did not control his life. Fernandez felt it imperative to let others know how he did it through his book "An Uncharted Desert Isle."

About the Author
In his youth, Rick Fernandez never aspired to do much. However, he has now obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Human Services and his Certificate in Gerontology. Fernandez has worked for 10 years assisting seniors. He has worked alongside a disabled Marine for five years, helping him adjust to his disabilities after suffering a massive head injury in the Gulf War. Fernandez had to leave the said position in northern California to assist his older brother in the South who recently passed away, as did his wife two years prior. The couple had contracted hepatitis C at the hospital where they worked. They could not tolerate the medication, so they had to stop. Fernandez had contracted the same germ, but he is cured after a couple months of pills due to the new medication now. Such is life.
