The first book in author Richard Sloane's "Back to..." series, "Back to the Dark Ages!" (published by Trafford Publishing) follows two 11-year-olds on the adventure of a lifetime in the 8th century A.D.

June and Augie, contemporary children, visit a fun fair, looking for some harmless entertainment. There, the children take a ride on a magic carousel and are spun back to 731 A.D. where they meet the Venerable Father Bede, famous scholar and monk, who educates them in the customs and lifestyle of the period.

"Father Bede charges them with an important mission to take two valuable manuscripts from his monastery to the king in York for safekeeping," Sloane explains. "It is a highly perilous journey on which they meet many dangers including wolves and Vikings."

An excerpt from "Back to the Dark Ages!":

"As we got closer to our destination, we started to see whole villages burnt to the ground with young children sitting on the ground crying and no sign of their parents... Then we saw a plume of dust in the distance approaching rapidly and one of the scouts came galloping back to say that a large group of heavily armed men were approaching."

Readers will join June and Augie on the adventure of their lifetime before they are spun back on their great horses safely to their own century.

Sloane hopes "Back to the Dark Ages!" will give readers from roughly age 9 to 13 a fun way into history and some insight into the rigors of life before advanced medicine and high technology came along.
