Love comes in all shapes and sizes, from the first blush of romantic love to long-time lovers to those given a second chance at lost love.

"The Prevalence of Love: Glimpses of the Human Condition" includes 12 short stories starring people trying to make sense of their world and their relationships. In "Nora," a single woman turning 50 ponders the road not taken when she refused her college sweetheart's proposal of marriage. "Vita Nova" opens with the beauty of Beethoven's music, which brings together two people who haven't seen each other for 40 years. Now, despite the scars of their lives, they have a chance to begin again - with each other.

"My Heart's in the Highlands" describes an unlikely love story that begins when a senior tour group stops at a Scottish bed and breakfast, while "Arlington" explores the contentious relationship a war veteran has with his country. As he tells his wife of 30 years, "I have issues," and she understands. R.J. Reilly's deftly written stories prove both moving and inspiring, his characters memorable as they strive to respond to life on their own terms.

Author R.J. Reilly was assigned to a U.S. Army combat engineering battalion that served in France and Germany in World War Two. The native Detroiter went on to college on the GI Bill after his discharge in 1946, earning a master's degree and Ph.D. in English and American literature. He taught at the University of Detroit until he retired in 1987. His novels and volumes of short stories include "Over There" and the soon-to-be-published "Weekend in the Country," "The Pelican Affair" and "The Bronte House." His essay "Henry James and the Morality of Fiction" won the Norman Foerster Award for best scholarly essay in American Literature in 1967. To contact him, email rreilly16(at)comcast(dot)net.
