Armed with nothing but a name, Peggy Barnes launched an investigation to find her birth mother. A treasure trove of letters saved by an unknown cousin provide inspiration for this new memoir by Dog Ear Publishing, in which the author reveals her humble roots. It's a story of determination and grit, covering the lives of two remarkable women.

When Barnes was 65 years old two things happened: Her adoptive mother died, and the state of Alabama released her sealed birth record. She learned for the first time about her birth mother, Pauline Miller, an unwed 19-year-old from the back hills of Alabama. Adopted when she was 2 years old, MariLouise Janelle Miller began a difficult relationship with her new mother. Receiving her birth certificate gave her hope she could find her biological mother.

"I Knew You by Name: The Search for My Lost Mother" details Barnes' five-year journey. Finally she meets with Pauline's distant cousin, who from a forgotten attic trunk finds Pauline's photos and letters. She hands them to Peggy saying, "Your mother had the awfullest life."

This poignant memoir delves into both Pauline's real and imagined life, and Peggy's own struggles with her children, failed first marriage and an inherited disease that colors her life. In the end she must find the power to forgive those who hurt her as well as herself.

Author Peggy Barnes holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Bennington College and has worked as a freelance food and travel writer and restaurant critic. Her award-winning short stories appear in literary magazines. Excerpts from "I Knew You by Name" were published in "Halfway Down the Stairs," "Foliate Oak" and "Gravel." She and her husband, John, live in Dayton, Ohio. They have 11 grandchildren.
