Those who love the works of OF MICE AND MEN author John Steinbeck are in for a treat.

Found in the University of Texas at Austin archives by The Strand magazine managing editor Andrew F. Gulli, Steinbeck's book WITH YOUR WINGS was published in the magazine's holiday issue.

The newly discoverd work is about a black World War II pilot. Back in July 1944, radio personality Orson Welles read the story on the air following a wartime broadcast, but besides that, the book had become forgotten.

"It doesn't ring a bell at all," said James Dourgarian, an expert on first edition Steinbeck books. "That's saying something if I haven't heard of it."

Also recently uncovered is an obscure comic by Calvin and Hobbes artist Bill Watterson. This comic was made as a poster for a French festival honoring Watterson, but it does not feature either of his iconic characters.

Journalist Greg Mitchell's nonfiction book THE TUNNELS: JFK VS. CBS & NBC will be portrayed on the silver screen under director Paul Greengrass and producer Mark Gordon. Crown purchased the rights to the post-World War II story exploring how some American news companies helped West Germans save family and friends from East Berlin.

There will be a benefit auction on Dec. 2, "First Editions/Second Thoughts," featuring books with annotations and pictures written by their authors, describing their thought processes at the time they were written. Authors include Toni Morrison, Patti Smith, Junot Diaz, and Philip Roth. Proceeds go to PEN American Center in NY.
