Gretchen Gagne looks at greed and narcissism and its effects on the already complex father-son dynamic in her new contemporary fiction, "Narcissism x Two: Like Father, Like Son" (published by iUniverse).

According to Gagne, "'Narcissism x Two' exposes both the eternal and universal compulsions of greed between certain members of society, here between a father and his son, as they relate to their most intimate family relationships."

Commencing in the southern metropolis of Charlotte, N.C., and continuing at the Charleston beach haven of Folly Beach, S.C., "Narcissism x Two" explores the complicated relationship between Bill Horton and his son, Chip. The two men exhibit classic narcissistic behavior throughout the book, conspiring together to develop and execute a plan to defraud life insurance companies at the expense of two different women who naively agree to marry Bill.

With "Narcissism x Two," Gagne has crafted an intriguing suspense story of murder, conspiracy and fraud. The character study of Bill and Chip reveals the pathological traits of inter-family narcissistic personality disorder, and the plot twists in a surprising climax that is reminiscent of a Shakespeare play.

"Such a relationship, built significantly, indeed, almost totally, upon greed, becomes a systemically devastating compulsion for exploiting the dreams of others," Gagne explains, "more often than not, into a distorted macabre plan, with such consequences that it destroys even those that created the injustices themselves."
