Milton Joseph Batson Launches THE HEART OF MILTON

Poetry and essays allow writers to express themselves in ways few formats offer. Milton Joseph Batson takes full advantage of these media with a new book featuring his observations, released by Dog Ear Publishing. Through his writing, he captures the changes from his childhood through the present, revealing innermost thoughts, feelings and observations about life's joys and its tribulations but mainly about its most powerful force: love.

In "The Heart of Milton: Poetry, Love, Reflection," the poet remembers simpler times as a child, describes struggles as he grew up and shares how faith shaped his life. The poems cover the many stages of life and speak eloquently to human emotion. The book features sections titled Forever Love, Mother and Father, Children, Other Loves, Lost Love, My Country, Thoughts & More and Prayer.

In the poem "Dawn's Vision," one of many written with his wife in mind, Batson reveals this: "The radiance of our love would shine so brightly that the heavens would glow from our path, as we flew side by side." He writes of another form of love in the poem "Mother," which reads, "She taught me how to accept my failures and thirst for improvement. And, she did it all by example, in such a gentle and unassuming way."

He writes of the love of country with "Freedom," a poem honoring fellow veterans who have given their lives for their nation: "Then come warriors of spirit with unflinching glare, who, through the annals of time, have always come there." The poem "For Whom You Have Provided" describes the love of a son for his heavenly father: "I am your son, your child, and can never escape that wonderful privilege, nor would I ever so desire. And through it all, you have patiently walked by my side, with your loving eyes upon me, lest I stumble."

Milton Joseph Batson has been writing poetry since he was a young child. He experienced a childhood similar to that of literary figure Huckleberry Finn, growing up on the islands of Eastport, Maine, and Compobello, Canada, having adventures with his best friend. Batson, who has a degree in applied science/industrial engineering field from Miami University of Ohio, served in the Air Force for 20 years in its space and missile program, first working in ICBM silos in North Dakota before transferring to Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, where he did operational testing before retiring from the Air Force.

During his second career, Batson spent more than 20 years as a veterans' representative for the State of California, serving veterans returning from war zones and others. He developed many new programs to help veterans with their transition to civilian life as well as those struggling with joblessness and homelessness. He and his wife, Pamela, live in a rural area on the Central Coast of California, a stone's throw from the Pacific Ocean. They have seven children and 21 grandchildren.
