In 1980, Police Inspector John MacLennan was found dead in his locked Hong Kong flat. His chest had five bullet wounds, but the death was ruled a suicide. The case rocked headlines, catching the attention of Aileen Bridgewater, a local radio talk show host who questioned the ruling of the death. Her husband, acclaimed author Ken Bridgewater, now pens a fictionalized account of the strange case of MacLennan's death and the dangerous opposition Aileen's questions faced in "Open Verdict: A Hong Kong Story" (published by Trafford Singapore).

Based on actual events, "Open Verdict" attempts to unwrap the many mysteries surrounding the MacLennan case. Ken carefully details all case notes with readers, calling attention to the locked flat, the five bullet wounds and the gun with no fingerprints. Perhaps his most glaring piece of evidence is that MacLennan was a suspected homosexual, which was a crime in Hong Kong at the time.

As the news of MacLennan's death spreads, Aileen causes an uproar on her talk show as she suspects foul play and calls for further investigation. MacLennan's relative, private detective John Conway, is called in from London to investigate. Soon Aileen and Conway find themselves targets as a thrilling plot unfolds, threatening all parties to keep quiet or else face the consequences.

"The reader becomes a member of the jury and should bring in a verdict," says Ken.
