James Osbon Releases Fictional Biography SAND RIVER
A small, horsey, winter resort town, Aiken, South Carolina, is forced through a major upheaval when the United States Atomic Energy Commission announces and then constructs a massive nuclear weapons plant during the beginning of the Cold War. The project is enormous in every respect, requiring 8,000 people to build it and as many as 22,000 employees to run it when completed. When it began operations, it encompassed 310 square miles and occupied a significant portion of two existing South Carolina counties.
Sand River, a compelling fictional biography written by author James Osbon tells the story of Casey Gannon, a ten-year-old boy who is forced to relocate from out west to Aiken, South Carolina because of the unexpected death of Vera Dudley Gannon, his mother. By happenstance, his only relatives were his Uncle Jake Gannon and Aunt Anne Gannon who both live in Aiken, but he is not warmly welcomed by them at first. He is savvy enough to realize that any chance of a happy life will have to happen for him in Aiken, and he makes this discovery early enough to use the friendliness of the town to help in his development toward becoming a contributing adult.
As years went by, Casey became a promising baseball player who is destined for the Major Leagues. But one day, he stumbles onto a disturbing secret that disrupts both the Gannon Family and that of Casey's good friend and childhood buddy Zach Kessler's family which will cause everyone into a new behavior and onto a different path. What terrible secret will Casey discover in Aiken? What is he going to do about it?
Sand River highlights to readers the regular townspeople of Aiken plus the Winter Colony residents, and adds the dimension of the nuclear weapons scientists who came to the town in the 1950s. Through this story, author James Osbon has successfully merged real people with fictitious characters in an accurate portrayal of Aiken and some of the historical events in American history between 1948 and 1990. He is also proud to say that Aiken has weathered the many changes very well - growing in permanent population from 7,000 in 1950 to 30,000 by 2013 - and has emerged in the early 21st century in good health and with as much or more promise than it ever had.

About the Author
James Osbon was born in Aiken, SC and lived there for the first eighteen years of his life. He was an observant young boy and witnessed the coming of the Savannah River Plant as an involved teenage student citizen. The story he tells in "Sand River" is a combination of true events involving real people mixed with a vivid imagination and fictional characters in a time span covering the late 1940s until the present. He attended the College of William and Mary, obtaining a degree in Economics. He is married to Bea McKay Osbon and they have two adult sons as well as three granddaughters. When they are not present at their home in Aiken's Sand River Condominiums, they reside on Amelia Island, Florida.
