How much will a man sacrifice to realize his goals? Author Frank Guo answers this question in a heartrending story of a striving Chinese man's endeavor to live the American Dream. Ironic as it may seem, his debut book titled A Shattered Dream reveals how some people risk too much no matter how rough the road may be just to gain comfort and luxury.

According to the 2012 Annual Report of Chinese International Migration, the United States of America is the number one destination with the ongoing immigration of its citizens. Although it has been identified that the foremost reason is for a better education for their children, a fair mix of entrepreneurs are moving to the US to look for greener pastures. In the year 2011 alone, an estimated 90,000 Chinese were granted permanent residency in the country. The States also attracts large numbers of other immigrants coming from different countries every year for their American dreams according to different reports from U.S. federal agencies.

In this book, Chinese teacher Dan Liu arrives in the United States with an unwavering aim to reach his goal: to get a master's in engineering and land a white-collared job. But the odds are getting in his way. He not only struggles financially, but he seems to lose his ground and eventually gets lost morally. Just because of a dream, Dan sacrifices many aspects of his life.

He can't let go of the dream just yet. Not when he's one step closer to the life he worked so hard for. He still believes that he would make it one day. With hard work and perseverance like the few flourishing fellow immigrants whom he met in struggling journey, success can't be that far. But all that was wishful thinking. When his whole life is crumbling into pieces, for what is it worth fighting for?

Readers can find out in this poignant, page-turner fiction novel that engraves a mental note to look back and evaluate one's self on a regular basis. For, often, it is too late that one realizes that the bridges have been burned and there's not anything to turn back to.
