Eleanor Lopes Akahloun Releases New Memoir

SPRINGFIELD, Va.

Growing up and listening to the stories of the elders in the community, instilled in author Eleanor Lopes Akahloun a sense of pride in her Cape Verdean heritage. In "The Magic of Dreams: An American Diplomat's Journey" (published by Xlibris), she shares her inspiring personal journey that explores and celebrates her roots.

It is not common knowledge that the Cape Verdeans are an ethnic and racial minority of Portuguese African origin and that they immigrated to America beginning in the early 19 century. They endured multiple hardships both in their native country and in their new home. Akahloun is impressed with their fortitude, resiliency, and the sacrifices they made to ensure a better life for their children. She also felt drawn to document their trials, tribulations, and accomplishments.

"The Magic of Dreams"conveys the story of a Cape Verdean- American whose heritage and family enabled her to leave her small hometown and pursue her life's passions. These are memoirs of a retired American diplomat who served in the U.S. Foreign Service for more than 40 years. Along the way, there were colorful adventures and valuable lessons learned as a result of living overseas and visiting the world's seven continents.

The memoir is written in a question-and-answer format, with a perfect blend of wit, intrigue, and light humor. "I think my life exemplifies that dreams are magical even though chasing them can sometimes be extremely challenging," Akahloun says.

About the Author
Eleanor L. Akahloun, born in 1943, was raised in a small Cape Verdean community in Onset, Massachusetts. She is a retired diplomat with the U.S. State Department, where she served forty-three years initially as a Foreign Service secretary and ultimately as a human resources officer. She is a graduate of Chamberlayne Junior College and attended evening classes at Boston University. She has traveled to over fifty countries and held assignments in the Philippines, Morocco, Kenya, Tunisia, Canada, Uruguay, China, Venezuela, and Washington, D.C. She has two children and currently resides outside of Washington, D.C., where she enjoys writing, traveling, practicing yoga, and engaging in volunteer work.
