"D. B. Cooper is still at large," says Richard Kavanaugh, author of the new book "Diary of a Hijacker: The D. B. Cooper Story" (published by AuthorHouse).

"The hijacking is still an open case with the FBI after 41 years," explains Kavanaugh. His book, "Diary of a Hijacker," reacquaints readers with the bizarre hijacking story from 1971 where a man known as D. B. Cooper hijacked a commercial Boeing 727, gathered $200,000 in ransom and parachuted to freedom, never to be apprehended or heard from again.

After reviewing the hijack of Northwest 305 as it was known by the public in 1971, Kavanaugh takes readers back five years before the crime to meet Dan Cooper, a 34 year-old fictional newlywed living in marital bliss. However, as Kavanaugh writes, Cooper loses his job, becomes mixed up in a complicated relationship between him, his wife and a wealthy widow named Louise, and sinks to a low point when his wife is hospitalized after an accident. Cooper decides to dramatically restore his self-esteem and his finances by hijacking a plane for ransom money.

Although many writers have speculated about the events surrounding the unsolved hijacking case, Kavanaugh says his book is one of the few - if not the only - fictional novel about D. B. Cooper. He offers readers a new perspective of the story, painting a romantically motivated, disillusioned and anti-establishment anti-hero.
