Commonwealth Books Re-Releases Barbara Brooks Wallace's Memoir

Barbara "Bobbie" Wallace has written "Small Footsteps in the Land of the Dragon" for grown-ups who are not too old to be swept away. Bobbie is a fabulous storyteller, which is good because her unusual childhood is impossible to imagine. Her American father abandoned a fledgling career in Hollywood in the 1920s to sell lamp oil in China. He eventually became an executive for Standard Oil of China. A few years after the Russian Revolution, at sixteen-years of age, her mother left her war-torn homeland and came to live with relatives in Shanghai. after earning a nursing degree at the Harvard Medical School of China, she rose to become the head of nursing at Shanghai's only sanitarium. The success of her parents allowed Bobbie and her sister to grow up with "modern" comforts in a country where they were scarce. When you read her book, you will see what precocious little Bobbie saw and hear what she heard. While her memories are full of humor, they also convey a child's awareness of the darker side of life in pre-war China.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Bobbie Wallace left China shortly before the Japanese invasion of 1937. She and her sister went to Claremont, California, where they stayed with a friend of the family who was on the faculty of Pomona College. After graduating from Claremont High School, Bobbie joined her sister at Pomona College. Her English professor was a fan of The New Yorker magazine and told her that since her essays were good enough to be published by the magazine she should take writing classes in addition to his English courses. Ignoring his sage advice, she transferred to UCLA and majored political science. Graduating with "no employable skills," she took a low-paying "glamour" job as a script secretary in an advertising agency. A few similarly forgettable jobs later, she met and married Air Force Major James Wallace. Soon after their marriage, her husband was transferred to the Pentagon. While living in Northern Virginia, Bobbie wrote her first children's book. Since then, she has published over twenty-five and won many coveted awards. Among these were the prestigious William Allen White Award, the Mystery Writers of America EDGAR awards for two others, and two nominations from the Mystery Writers for her "Dickensian" mysteries. Her first two Miss Switch books were purchased by ABC and became the highest rated shows on their children's Week End specials.
