Charles Crandall's first work of fiction, "A Promise of Death" (published by AuthorHouse), is set in war-ridden 1943 Los Angeles, and tells the gripping story of a real-life crime that happened in the city during that period.

Nick Black, a private investigator and former police detective, takes the case of Plattman, an accountant for an oil corporation. Plattman has stolen a confidential file that reveals a conspiracy to do away with the city rail system for the benefit of the oil companies and road vehicle manufacturers. Meanwhile, Regina Phelps hires Black to help her with a scandal threatening her family. Faced with murder charges and threats to his life, Black remains steadfast to his aim of bringing the culprits to justice.

Based on an actual case in the 1940s that involved major corporations, the story is well-researched. The intriguing sub-plots artfully done in the fast-paced story will keep the reader riveted until the end.

An excerpt from "A Promise of Death"

"The sweet smells of oven-baked tortillas and black beans boiling in open pots blowing in from Chavez Ravine, exotic aromas floating up from Chinatown and the acrid bite of automobile exhaust that you could feel in your throat, all of it combining to formulate air - L.A. air."

"Black laughed. 'You know something, Sammy Boy? You're nothing without a blade. You're a pipsqueak who talks tough because, inside, you're scared shitless. Now, I outweigh you by-what do you think? A hundred pounds? I might start by taking your shiny little toy and shoving it up your scrawny ass.'"
