Blackfriars Theatre is proud to announce its 2019-2020 Season, commemorating 70 years of artistic programming in Rochester, NY! Since its inception in 1950, the theatre has called a number of Rochester landmarks its home: Christ Church, Xerox Auditorium, School of the Arts, and, for the past 10 years, 795 E. Main Street. In the last five years of its 70-year history, Blackfriars has made a point of raising the bar and the community's expectations of what local theater can look like. By consistently producing professionally-minded, artistically-ambitious productions, Blackfriars cultivates a broad, diverse community of theatrical supporters that see the value in intimate, affecting entertainment experiences. Blackfriars strives to break more records and welcome more Rochesterians in its 70th Season, and looks forward to February 18th at 7 p.m. when they reveal what is in store for the 2019-2020 Season.
"Next season will not only mark a historical milestone for the company but cap off a five-year reinvention process where Blackfriars has worked tirelessly to celebrate local artistry, champion community outreach and enrich the lives of our patrons and artists," says Artistic & Managing Director Danny Hoskins. "Over the past four years, Blackfriars has expanded opportunity to our local artists, engaging with over 250 new designers, directors, actors, crew and volunteers. We've partnered with over 30 new community organizations, artistic companies, downtown businesses and neighborhood programs and have welcomed over a thousand new patrons, subscribers and donors in this short period of time. To see the arts thrive so vividly within an organization that has called downtown Rochester its home for 70 years is a testament to the rich and vibrant love our community has for this company. We are deeply grateful to our home town and to our patrons and artists and thrilled to be able to be such a large and integral part of our city's artistic fabric."
The theatre's 70th season is a tribute to the power of storytelling - showcasing a golden age musical comedy, two new plays by two of the most produced female playwrights working today, a family-friendly adventure, a laugh out loud comedy and, of course, their 2018 Season Soiree winner, Next To Normal. Along with a number of new partnerships, special reveals and surprises, their 70th Season will prove to be an exciting celebration of Blackfriars Theatre and its wonderful community of artists and patrons.
Members of the media and public are invited to Blackfriars Theatre (795 E. Main Street) on Monday, February 18th at 7 p.m. as the theatre announces its 2019-2020 production lineup. This upcoming season marks Blackfriars Theatre's 70th year of theatre-making in downtown Rochester. There will be light snacks and hor d'oeuvres available beginning at 6:15 p.m., with the announcement and opening remarks from Artistic & Managing Director, Danny Hoskins, beginning promptly at 7 p.m. Please e-mail megan@blackfriars.org to RSVP and reserve a media seat.
