Brooklyn Museum's Upcoming Target First Saturday to Celebrate Wangechi Mutu

December's Target First Saturday celebrates Brooklyn-based artist Wangechi Mutu. The evening features a performance by Saul Williams, music by Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber, film, interactive art, and conversation. Target First Saturday events attract thousands of visitors to free art and entertainment programs each month. December highlights include:

5 p.m. Music "Artist's Pick": Pegasus Warning merges a variety of otherworldly sounds, electronicmusic, and soulful beats.

5:30-7:30 p.m. Pop-Up Gallery Talks: Short, lively talks shed light on works in our Permanent Collections.

6 p.m. Curator Talk: Saisha Grayson, Assistant Curator at the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, discusses themes in the exhibition Wangechi Mutu: A Fantastic Journey.

*6:30-8:30 p.m. Hands-On Art: Create an experimental two-part collage inspired by Mutu's work.

7:30 p.m. Artist Talk: Nigerian-born artist Njideka Akunyili talks about her work, which uses acrylic,collage, charcoal, colored pencil, and Xerox transfer to create patterned paintings.

7:30-8:30 p.m. Spoken Word: Musician, poet, writer, and actor Saul Williams blends poetry with alternative hip-hop.

8:30 p.m. Book Talk: Bold As Love Magazine presents authors Kiini Ibura Salaam (Ancient, Ancient, 2013) and Bridgett M. Davis (Into the Go-Slow, fall 2014) reading from new work, followed by a discussion led by author Tayari Jones.

8:30-10 p.m. Music: Improvisational band Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber combines influences from funk, jazz, rock, reggae, soul, hip-hop, heavy metal, and twentieth-century classical music.

Museum admission is free from 5 to 11 p.m. and includes entrance to all galleries and events. Programs are subject to change without notice. Some Target First Saturday programs have limited space and are ticketed on a first-come, first-served basis. *Denotes a ticketed event. Lines for free tickets often form 30 minutes in advance.
