BAX Announces 2014-15 Artists In Residence & Space Grant Recipients

BAX / Brooklyn Arts Exchange is proud to announce the 2014-15 Artists In Residence (AIR) and Space Grant recipients.

BAX is a fundamental resource for NYC dance and theater artists, providing critical urban residency support for the development of cutting edge new work. Since 1998, when BAX received a Bessie Award "for building both a house and a home for the arts in Brooklyn," BAX's service to NYC artists has deepened and broadened. Thousands of NYC performing artists come through BAX's doors each year to rehearse, perform, teach, curate, take part in residencies and act as artist advisors. The organization's distinct focus on developmental process and individualized approach to working with each artist has made it a nurturing incubator with a proven record of success in supporting NYC dance and theater artists.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE (AIR) PROGRAM

BAX AIR is tailored to each artist's unique needs, process and artistic practice. Its structure develops peer support, collaborative problem-solving and constructive criticism. Each artist-in-residence receives 250 free hours of rehearsal space per year and an annual stipend. Artists have priority for BAX studios, and are asked to plan their space needs in three-month blocks. Throughout the residency, each artist has a monthly one-on-one consultation with Artistic Director Marya Warshaw, and group meetings with all six artists every six weeks. Group meeting topics include video documentation; developing relationships with producers; challenges of collaboration and co-directing; establishing a teaching practice; and finding life/work balance. All artists have opportunities to present works in progress and/or finished work at BAX with full production and marketing support from BAX. Following performances at BAX, BAX often assists artists in delivering their vision to a broader audience by co-producing their work in Manhattan venues, or establishing relationships with producers and funders that will allow them to move forward.

NEW THIS YEAR: TEACHING ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

Recognizing that NYC is home to countless talented generative artists in dance & theater who are also gifted and dedicated teachers we seek to work with ONE artist in this pilot year (July 2014 - June 2015) who will create an original work with student artists (that may also include professional artists) and will develop their own teaching artist practice through interaction with established BAX educational programs.

SPACE GRANT PROGRAM

Our Space Grant program is the oldest of our programs that support developing artists. It was initially created for dance artists and expanded to support theater and performance artists in the late 1990s. Space grants are often an artist's entry point into a deeper relationship with BAX. A significant number of our Artists In Residence started their relationship with BAX as space grantees and then claimed the organization as their artistic home. Space grants acknowledge that seasoned artists and newly emerging artists need uninterrupted space and time to try new ideas or to change directions. Again and again in surveys of NYC's performing artists, access to space is the most essential resource. We remain committed to space grants as the core provision of our Artist Services offerings. Artists are selected by application and reviewed by a panel of former space grantees, Artists In Residence, staff and guests.

BAX is offering three different types of Space Grants:

SUMMER SPACE GRANT

Summer Space Grant is ideal for the Brooklyn-based dance or theater artist who already has a performance commitment or an artist who is embarking on a research period for an upcoming work and does not wish to present.

FALL SPACE GRANT
The Fall Space Grant allows Brooklyn-based dance and theater artists an opportunity to perform the work they have developed in front of an audience at the conclusion of the rehearsal process in a showcase format with a post- performance discussion.

PARENT/ARTIST SPACE GRANT

Now in its third year, the Parent/Artist Space Grant has grown to include theater as well as dance artists. This program has been developed to address some of the needs of NYC artists trying to meet the challenges of being an artist and a parent to newborn through pre-school age children.

ABOUT BAX

Founded in 1991, BAX | Brooklyn Arts Exchange, is a community based performing arts center dedicated to developing artists of all ages, from children to professionals. The organization offers community access to arts and culture, supporting the creation of new work by emerging artists, engaging diverse audiences and providing arts education to youth and families.
