On Saturday, April 18, the Band presents Talking About the Weather: Music to Chase Away the Gray. The concert begins at 2:00 PM at the Performing Arts Center in Barnstable High School. Admission is free, with audience donations welcome to fund future concerts.
The Cape Cod Concert Band, a 52-piece wind and percussion ensemble, is uniquely positioned to conjur the stormy nights and sunshiny days experienced across our shared planet. Aptly, Richard Saucedo’s Fanfare for the Third Planet, a rousing tribute to Earth, opens the program, setting the stage for the musical meteorology to follow.
Windstorm by Vince Gassi, the first weather system on the program, offers up a multi-metered depiction of the forward momentum of an advancing storm. Windy weather arrives again in the pulsing final selection, Of Gale Force Winds. Sustained gusts send Cape mariners to harbor, but the Band assures all concertgoers will be safe in their seats.
And fear not—it’s not all heavy weather—after all, spring is coming! Opening the second half of the program is Yellow, from Robert W. Smith’s Krisanna’s Colors suite. According to the young girl battling childhood cancer, yellow was the color of a bright and joyful day. It’s also the weather of hope in George Harrison’s Here Comes the Sun, performed by the CCCB in an arrangement by conductor Tom Borning.
The unusual sightings of the Northern Lights this past year come to life in another featured selection on the program, Aurora Borealis by Rossano Galante. Galante, known for his work in film, has composed a work that invites you to hear the twinkling stars and experience the wash of sound that feels a lot like those swirling reds, greens and purples that have been visiting Cape Cod. Close your eyes, listen, and you may just see the Lights!
Talking About the Weather is presented free of charge by the musical volunteers of the Cape Cod Concert Band, under the direction of Tom Borning. The CCCB is supported by audience donations, business sponsors, and a grant from the Cape Cod Melody Tent.
