Red Swans, based on the real-life experiences of Lisa Gervai Egler &Katja Caselles. The play explores the power of art as means of defiance and survival. It centers on the friendship between Lisa and Katja (both with Jewish mothers), who meet at art school in Berlin during WWII. The fast friends share a love of art, music, and life. Katja meets a talented potter named Cato, who recruits the girls into a resistance group dubbed The Red Orchestra by the Gestapo. The friends serve as couriers and embark on dangerous missions. Against all odds, Lisa and Katja survive the war and reunite in Berlin. Regardless of what the future holds, they realize that their friendship and artwork gave them hope and a reason to live.
