The Poets' Theatre Presents ALBATROSS, Now thru 3/1

By:

The Poets' Theatre has announced Albatross, a solo performance piece adapted from Samuel Taylor Coleridge's captivating classic, "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner." The adaptation, written by Matthew Spangler and Benjamin Evett, is directed by Boston theater alum Rick Lombardo and features Benjamin Evett. Albatross will be on stage at the Liebergott Black Box at Emerson University, running tonight, February 13th through March 1st 2015.

Albatross is a bold adaptation of one of the most riveting poems ever written, bringing to life The Ancient Mariner, doomed for eternity to retell his harrowing story of an old ship, a voyage to the bottom of the world, and a mystical seabird. A powerful tale of adventure, taking one on a spiritual journey into the connectedness of all living things.

Having innovative and award-winning American theater director and playwright Rick Lombardo assist in the telling of the story is part of what makes this adaptation such a compelling project. He served as the Artistic Director of New Repertory Theatre in Watertown, MA from 1996 to 2008 before moving on to become Producing Artistic Director of San Jose Repertory Theatre, which he ran until September 2014.

Among Mr. Lombardo's classic productions, those most noteworthy include the world premiere of the musical The Snow Queen, which he also co-wrote, along with the new play Game On by Tony Taccone and Dan Hoyle. Lombardo says, "It's a special thrill to come back to Boston for a time to work on this unique new play, and with one of my favorite actors. I think Boston, with it's deep roots as a seafaring and literary town, is the perfect place to launch this powerful re-imagining of Coleridge's enigmatic and hallucinatory tale."
