One of a kind musical group Black Violin will bring their unique blend of jazz, hip-hop, funk and classical music to the Colonial for a series of events this May. They will work with local area music students in two special workshops on Wednesday, May 11, followed by two school matinee performances on Thursday, May 12. They will then play an exhilarating family performance on Saturday, May 14 at 2pm. The performances are all sponsored by Greylock Federal Credit Union.

Tickets for the family performance are $15 for all seats and may be purchased in person at the Colonial Ticket Office at 111 South Street or by calling (413) 997-4444 or online at www.TheColonialTheatre.org. The Ticket Office is open Monday-Friday 10pm-5pm, Saturdays 10pm-2pm or on any performance day from 10am until intermission.

Black Violin is a revolutionary music group featuring two classically trained violinists and their DJ. Together, these three create a unique sound, blending the classical with the modern, that nobody has ever heard but everybody wants to feel. Their dual mission is to demonstrate there are no limits to what a violin can do and also to give young people the same opportunities in music that they had.
Kev Marcus, a violin player since the age of nine, and Wil B, who has played the viola since he was fourteen, met at the Dillard High School of Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale. While there they were exposed to the work of Stuff Smith, a legendary jazz violinist known for his boundary pushing work with his electric violin. His soulful final album entitled Black Violin inspired the duo and became the source of their name.

Joining with DJ TK and manager Sam G, the duo began to take the music world by storm. The group began a rigorous touring schedule that included a celebrated performance with Alicia Keys at the 2004 Billboard Music awards and receiving the title of "Apollo Legend" at the Apollo Theatre. Over the course of their career they have played with acts as diverse as P. Diddy, Kanye West, Fifty Cent, Aerosmith, Tom Petty, Aretha Franklin and the Eagles.

The members of Black Violin are committed to giving children the same opportunities that they had. With school music programs being culled all across the country, they have embarked upon a campaign of social change - using youth orchestras and reinvigorated music programs to show children and teens that they are capable of expressing themselves in ways they have never dreamed. That is why they are excited to participate in a pair of special workshops with students of Pittsfield High School and Herberg Middle School.
