Further information on the benefit recipients:

Domestic Violence Unit of the Stoneham Police Department:
Chief Bongiorno of the Stoneham Police Department requested funding through a Department of Justice Grant in 2009 to fund a Civilian Domestic Violence Liaison position, provide Rape Aggression Training for three police officers as well as purchase equipment for R.A.D. community programs to be offered free of charge to women, and resource materials to be used in providing support to people in Stoneham. The Domestic Violence Liaison is responsible for following up on domestic violence incidences referred to the liaison by police officers providing victims with information on obtaining restraining orders, finding emergency shelter, referrals to domestic violence counseling and support groups as well as legal services that specialize in domestic violence cases. In a Town of Stoneham's size there seems to have been a large number of domestic incidences in 2009. The unit had 205 domestic violence calls including restraining order violations. Currently the unit has 170 active restraining orders on file which is an 8% increase over last year. The increase in numbers of retraining orders is partly due to the very effective job the officers do in educating victims about their rights. The DV Liaison can assist these individuals in maneuvering the myriad of obstacles to obtain services they require. Extra funding would allow the Domestic Violence Unit to expand the Liaison's outreach with the Stoneham Alliance Against Violence, church groups, schools, businesses, and other local social service providers, in order to raise their awareness and meet the needs they may identify pertaining to domestic violence including bullying, sexual assault, stalking, and harassment.

Tee Time For "the Tiger" (Jimmy Fund Benefit):
Since its founding in 1948, the Jimmy Fund has supported the fight against cancer in children and adults at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, helping to raise the chances of survival for cancer patients around the world. So in 2006, while Edward "the Tiger" Ahern was battling esophageal cancer, his family decided to organize a golf event in his honor. The event proved to be quite successful raising thousands for this great cause. Despite, his courage and tenacity, "the Tiger" would not live to see the second one in 2007 but again, the family rounded up the troops and in two years raised more than $65K. The past two years were quite difficult with the economy so they took a break and now have decided to give it one final try to raise the funds needed to bring it to $100K. It is in this way, that "the Tiger's" memory can truly be honored by helping other families in the fight against cancer. This fall, the family will host their last golf tournament so this "special evening with the Edwards Twins" will serve as a kickoff to that event and the proceeds will be included in the family's final total sent to the Jimmy Fund at Dana Farber later this year.
