Step inside the Franklin School for the Performing Arts (FSPA) on a Saturday afternoon and you’re likely to find music students of all ages and instruments jamming to varied genres of music with Kenny Hadley and Arnie Krakowsky—renowned Boston-area musicians who’ve performed with such music legends as Dizzie Gillespie, Van Morrison, Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, The Temptations and more. Faculty members Hadley and Krakowsky lead Saturday Sessions at FSPA, providing young instrumentalist with a unique opportunity to play alongside the two and other special guest musicians throughout the year.

Saturday Sessions are just one of the many ways to explore instrumental music at FSPA. Violinist Irina Fainkichen and pianist Ida Zelman bring international training, teaching and performance experience to equip FSPA students with a strong foundation in classical technique. Hadley directs the “Groovemasters” Percussion Ensemble, exploring Latin drumming techniques and solo, ensemble and orchestral work. Bryan Eyberg’s Pop Piano class teaches students to read a lead sheet and chord symbols and introduces ragtime, blues, funk, soul, R&B, jazz and rock. For the youngest music students, FSPA features the innovative Little Music School, teaching children as early as 18 months to play the piano, as well as Rattles and Rhythms, Wee Play and Do-Re-ME!, geared to children ages 1 through 5.

Private lessons are available on all instruments and at any level, whether for recreational interest or serious study. Small ensemble coaching, theory classes and ear training enhance musicality and support students’ interests in music genres ranging from classical and jazz to contemporary pop and rock. Student recitals and chamber music ensembles enable young musicians to apply what’s learned in the studio or classroom and gain increased confidence and enjoyment performing.

Fall classes begin at FSPA on September 10 and registration is ongoing. For more information or to receive a course catalogue, call (508) 528-8668 or visit www.fspaonline.com. FSPA is located at 38 Main Street in Franklin and in a new satellite location in downtown Hudson, beginning this September, at 14 Main Street.
