New Rep Announces ART

New Repertory Theatre, in residence at the Arsenal Center for the Arts, has announced 'ART,' from the Tony Award-winning playwright of God of Carnage. 'ART' will run from January 15 through February 5, 2012 in the Charles Mosesian Theater at the Arsenal Center for the Arts. The press opening will be held on Monday, January 16, 2012 at 7:30pm.

Antonio Ocampo-Guzman, the director of 'ART' states, "It is no wonder why 'ART' has become one of the most popular and produced plays of the last twenty years: it is rich, complex, full of paradox. This level of humanity makes it seem like the most humorous of tragedies or the most heart-breaking of comedies."

Ocampo-Guzman continues, "I'm particularly excited by the quality of work from all the members of our team. It is wonderful to make a play with some of the best actors, designers, and staff in Boston and to share it with one of the most demanding and discerning of audiences."

'ART' features New Rep favorites Doug Lockwood (Twelfth Night, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, and The Waverly Gallery) as Yvan, Robert Pemberton (Speed-the-Plow and Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune) as Marc, and Robert Walsh (Speed-the-Plow, True West, Holiday Memories, The Circle (director), and The Cocktail Hour (actor)) as Serge,

'ART' is written by Yasmina Reza and translated by Christopher Hampton.

This intelligent and witty Tony Award-winning play by Yasmina Reza asks the question, "What does our taste in art say about who we are as individuals?" When Serge, a novice art collector, asks his two friends to view his newly acquired work of art, this "priceless" piece tests their fifteen-year friendship and causes them to validate their self-worth.

Robert Pemberton (Marc) is happy to be back working at New Rep, having performed in Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune and Speed-the-Plow. Previous credits include: The Goat (Gloucester Stage Company); The Random Carusoe (CentaStage); and Patriot Act (The Fringe Festival in Edinborough, Scotland). He has also recently played Drazen in Ponies at Gloucester Stage Company, as well as Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream (Boston Theatre Works). He has been seen in Dinner With Friends (Tom) at the Gloucester Stage Company; Mercy Seat (Ben) at the Lyric Stage Company; Woman in Black (Kipps) at Stoneham Theatre; Antony and Cleopatra (Antony) at Boston Theater Works; Much Ado About Nothing (Benedick) at the Publick Theatre; and in the World Premiere of Shel's Shorts at the Market Theatre (2002 Elliot Norton Award). Yasmina Reza (playwright) is a French playwright and novelist, based in Paris, whose works have all been multi-award-winning, critical and popular international successes, produced worldwide and translated into 35 languages. She has written seven plays: Conversations After a Burial, The Passage of Winter, 'ART,' The Unexpected Man, Life X 3, A Spanish Play, God of Carnage, How You Talk the Game; and 6 novels: Hammerklavier, Une Desolation (Desolation), Adam Haberberg, Dans la Luge d'Arthur Schopenhauer, Nulle Part and L'Aube, le Soir ou la Nuit (Dawn Dusk or Night). Films include: Le Pique-Nique de Lulu Kreutz, directed by Didier Martiny and Chicas, written and directed by the author.

Christopher Hampton (translator) plays, musicals, and translations have garnered three Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, four Evening Standard Awards, and the New York Theatre Critics Circle Award. Prizes for his film and television work include an Academy Award, two BAFTAs, a Writer's Guild of America Award, the Prix Italian and a Special Jury Award at the Cannes Film Festival. His plays for the Royal Court include: Treats, Savages, The Philanthropist, Uncle Vanya, Total Eclipse, Marya, and When Did You Last See My Mother? Hampton's plays have been performed at the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Almeida, the Royal National Theatre, and both on West End and Broadway.

Antonio Ocampo-Guzman (director) is grateful for the opportunity to work at New Rep, having directed Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune last season. Antonio serves on the faculty at Northeastern University where he will direct Chuck Mee's Big Love. He directed The One Exception for the 1st Tennessee Williams Festival as well as collaborated with performance artists Jeff McMahon at Dixon Place, NYC and Carlos Manuel. International directing credits include Las Cuñadas (Bogotá) and Death and the Maiden (Toronto). Antonio has acted with Actors' Shakespeare Project, The Nora Theatre, Boston Playwrights Theater and Shakespeare & Company, among others. A Designated Linklater Master Teacher, Antonio adapted this popular method into Spanish and works frequently in Mexico and Spain. MFA Directing: York University, Toronto.
