The Little Theatre of Fall River, Inc., will present one of America's perennially favorite musicals, Hello Dolly!, for its final main stage subscription offering. All performances will be in the Margaret L. Jackson Arts Center at Bristol Community College on Elsbree Street in Fall River, Mass.
Hello Dolly! performs May 12 at 7:30 p.m., May 13 and 14 at 8 p.m., and May 15 at 2 p.mWith music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, and a book by Michael Stewart, Hello, Dolly! is based on Thorton Wilder's The Matchmaker. Hired to find a mate in turn of the century New York City for the incorrigible Horace Vandergelder, matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi finds the perfect match---herself! But first she must stop his impending marriage to someone else. Brimming with beautiful tunes such as "Put on Your Sunday Clothes," "Before the Parade Passes By," and "It Only Takes a Moment," and the title song, Hello Dolly! is a musical lover's dream.
The original Broadway production opened in 1964 and ran for 2,844 performances, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical in addition to nine other Tonys. The original cast starred Carol Channing as Dolly Levi in the most memorable role of her career. The part of Dolly, originally written for Ethel Merman, would be played by an impressive list of Broadway greats, including Ginger Rogers, Martha Raye, and Betty Grable, Mary Martin (London) , and finally Ethel Merman. In 1969, a movie version was made, directed by Gene Kelly and starring Barbara Streisand. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards.The production is co-directed Jeff Belanger and Janice MacDonald, with Robert Matthew Perry as musical director and Jennifer Bellanti as choreographer. John Nunes is the production's assistant director and co-stage manager. Co-stage manager is Rick Couitt, with Sue Couitt as assistant stage manager. The production stars Cathy Taitz as Mrs. Dolly Gallagher Levi. Also featured in the cast of are Roger S. Belanger, Gregory Silver, Roger Machado Fournier, Allyson Duarte, Lisa Tavares, Mariah Terry, William Sandler, Maryann Goulart and David Mello.
