Broadway's Brian Stokes Mitchell to Play Sanders Theatre, 1/23

Celebrity Series of Boston will present Broadway and film star Brian Stokes Mitchell on Thursday, January 23, 2014, at 8pm at Sanders Theatre, Memorial Hall, Harvard University, 45 Quincy Street, Cambridge.

This is his third appearance with the Celebrity Series of Boston. His first appearance was in 2007 and the most recent was in 2010.

Brian Stokes Mitchell has enjoyed a rich and varied career on Broadway, television, and film, along with appearances in the great American concert halls. A native of Seattle, Mitchell spent his formative years in San Diego performing with various theater groups. A move to Los Angeles in the late '70s brought him into contact with the entertainment industry, and numerous appearances in film and television followed, including a seven-year role on the medical drama Trapper John, MD.

Numerous film and TV appearances more recently include his role on "Glee" as one of Rachel Berry's (Lea Michele) two dads alongside Jeff Goldblum, "One Last Thing" which debuted at Toronto's 2005 Film Festival, recurring roles on "Crossing Jordan" and "Frasier," PBS' "Great Performances," DreamWorks' "The Prince of Egypt ," and his "Presidential Debut" in "The Singer and the Song" from the White House.

His Broadway career includes performances in "Man of La Mancha" (Tony nomination and Helen Hayes Award); "Kiss Me Kate" (Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards); "Ragtime" (Tony nomination); August Wilson's "King Hedley II" (Tony nomination); "Kiss of the Spider Woman;" "Jelly's Last Jam;" David Merrick's "Oh, Kay!" and "Mail," which earned him a Theatre World award for outstanding Broadway Debut. He continues to perform as both a soloist and a guest star at concerts across the United States. He has been invited to the White House and has performed for Presidents Clinton and Obama.

Although he has been featured in cast recordings, he released his self-titles debut solo album on RCA in 2006. In addition to singing, Stokes produced the album and also wrote many of the arrangements and orchestrations.

Stokes has enjoys working with numerous charitable organizations from the March of Dimes to the USO and is the 9-year Chairman of the Board of the Actors' Fund.
