Boston Public Works Theater Company to Stage HARD AND FAST, Opening 11/20

By:

Boston Public Works Theater Company will present Hard and Fast: a love story by Jess Foster as its first show of its second season. The full-length play will open on November 20, 2015 and continue through to December 5, 2015 at the Calderwood Pavilion at the BCA (539 Tremont Street, South End, Boston, MA). Tickets from $15-$25 are on sale through BostonTheatreScene.com (617-933-8600) or visit BostonPublicWorks.org.

Roger, a struggling mechanic, has a real passion for restoring classics. He's finally found his dream car, "Audra", a 1958 Austin Healey. When a wealthy lawyer wants to buy the car for his 16-year old son, Parker, the offer is too good for Roger to refuse. He makes one stipulation: Parker must help finish the car's restoration to understand its true value. When the time comes, will Roger be able to let the car go, or will his strange new feelings for Audra make it too difficult to give her up? Is this a bizarre obsession, or something much more?

Hard and Fast: a love story is about the bond between men and their cars. This fascination represents freedom, independence, and masculinity, and is often overtly sexual. "I grew up around car guys," said Jess Foster. "I wanted to explore that obsessive relationship, and what would happen if that relationship was threatened by other men." The question she poses with her play is, "Is this an infatuation, or do they really fall in love with these machines?"

Director Dawn M. Simmons, who just finished directing Saturday Night/Sunday Mornings (Lyric Stage Company), brings Foster's story to life. "I think Jess has created a bold examination of gender in this story. Why do these three men relate better to curved steel than to each other?"
