Berklee College of Music professors Mark Simos and Scarlet Keys will take the stage at Club Passim on Tuesday, January 29th for an evening exploring songwriting. Both have recently released highly regarded textbooks on songwriting styles and techniques. Singer-songwriter Sam Robbins, a Berklee student, who appeared last fall on NBC's The Voice, and other special guests will provide performances and demonstrations throughout the evening.

Keys, a full-time professor in the Songwriting Department at Berklee College of Music since 2003, teaches songwriting, lyric writing, performance, and upper-division songwriting courses. As a former staff songwriter for Warner/Chappell Music, she has released two albums as a solo artist and toured and performed with her original band. She has had a gold record, a number one song in Britain, and songs placed in film, television, and national commercials. Her book "The Craft of Songwriting" focuses on the process of creating a song, and how melody, harmony, lyrics and form all affect a song's overall impact.

Simos, Associate Professor in the Songwriting department at Berklee College of Music, has built a reputation as one of the premiere "new traditionalist" songwriters, reinvigorating and reshaping progressive acoustic music. His signature style has caught the ear of respected artists in bluegrass, Americana, Celtic, and contemporary folk genres, with more than 150+ recordings of his songs to date by artists including Alison Krauss and Union Station, Ricky Skaggs, Del McCoury, and Laurie Lewis. His new book "Songwriting in Practice" offers pragmatic tools, resources, practices, and principles for managing the many kinds of creative materials gathered or generated across a song's life cycle.
