Also Known As Theatre Debuts With World Premiere Production Of A GOOD DEATH

Boston indie theatre company Also Known As Theatre announces it will debut this summer with the world premiere of A Good Death by award-winning Toronto playwright, Shelley M. Hobbs. The production will run August 16 - September 2 at the Calderwood Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts, located at 527 Tremont Street in Boston's South End.

A Good Death tells the story of Adrienne, a queer woman who is left in a coma following a tragic hit-and-run accident. Adrienne's best friend Ruth has power of attorney to make decisions on her behalf, but Adrienne's estranged and deeply religious mother, Margaret, has different beliefs about who her daughter is and how her fate should be decided. The play explores the intersections of science and faith, queer identity, and the power of chosen family. It received a workshop presentation at the 2016 Toronto Fringe Festival where it was critically acclaimed for its strong writing and empathy for all of its characters.

"I am ecstatic that A Good Death has been chosen as Also Known As Theatre's inaugural production," says playwright Shelley Hobbs. "I am confident that Also Known As Theatre has the creativity, experience, and talent to ensure the audience will feel this play in their bones long after the curtain drops."

Also Known As Theatre's production stars seasoned Boston fringe favorites Alissa Cordeiro (Flat Earth Theatre, Boston Public Works, Sleeping Weazel) as Ruth and Lynn Wilcott (Fresh Ink Theatre, Improv Boston, Outside the Box) as Margaret. Directed by Also Known As Theatre co-founder Alexandra Smith (Open Theatre Project, Praxis Stage Company, Zeitgeist Stage) and led by an all-female design team, Also Known As Theatre's debut production embodies the company's commitment to creating opportunities for female-identifying artists on- and off stage.

"This play challenges us to keep our hearts open even in the most trying of circumstances and to reflect carefully on the responsibilities that come when we claim the title of 'family,'" says director Alexandra Smith. "It is so exciting to delve into a complex, female-centered story with such a powerhouse creative team."
