Company of Fools Offers A WALK IN THE WOODS Reading Today

By: Sep. 27, 2014

The Sun Valley Center for the Arts and Company of Fools will present a play reading of Lee Blessing's A Walk in the Woods tonight, September 27, at 6:30pm at The Center in Ketchum. This reading, which is free and open to the public, is part of The Center's fall BIG IDEA multidisciplinary project, Forests, Foraging and Fires.

A Walk in the Woods is the story of an impossible friendship, one that grows between an earnest young American arms negotiator and his more cynical Soviet counterpart during their private walks together over a period of many months. It is also the story of two nations attempting to avert a nuclear holocaust in spite of the political and economic forces that seem to be pushing them relentlessly toward it. Directed by Denise Simone, the cast features Scott Creighton as Andrey Botvinnik and John Glenn as John Honeyman.

"There is an interesting line in the play," said Simone, "where the Soviet disarmament negotiator tells his American counterpart, 'We should put the table at the bottom of a missile silo. Then we would negotiate.' But playwright Blessing instead places the play in 'a pleasant woods on the outskirts of Geneva.' "It can only be in this setting," explained Simone, "that a deep and wise understanding develops between these two decent men-an accord that starkly differs from the truth that the real power rests not in their hands, but in the hands of those burdened by the bitterness of the past."

The fall BIG IDEA multidisciplinary project Forests, Foraging and Fires which offers our community the opportunity to participate in an in-depth conversation about our relationship to one of our most significant natural resources: the forest. Related programming for the project will also include a play reading, a panel discussion, lectures and films-all designed to offer the community a chance to think about how we engage with our forests today.
