Alley Rep Announces 2016/2017 Series: KILL THE DARLINGS

By: Sep. 07, 2016

Call it celebrity culture or just old-fashioned idolatry, but when we lavish more attention on characters and avatars than flesh-and-blood human beings, something essential is lost. In KILL THE DARLINGS, Alley Repertory Theater's 2016/2017 series, three comedic plays will confront the idols of politics, mythology, and pop in hopes of rediscovering our shared humanity.

"In theater we us the phrase, 'kill the darlings,' frequently. It is a call to examine your art and prune away the parts that are too precious - parts that aren't helping tell the story," said Managing Director Justin Ness. "For this series, we will examine the parts of society that have become too precious. If we strip them away, what will we find underneath?"

This October, the series opens with THE TOTALITARIANS, a twisted political satire with absurd relevance to present-day America. For the holiday season, princesses with incredible pipes will sing away the stereotypes in the hit musical DISENCHANTED!. And finally, in February, the one-man show, BUYER & CELLAR, takes inspiration from the idiosyncrasies of the real Barbra Streisand.
