As Troy was singing "I'll Cover You" tears were rolling down his face...what a performance. I've seen Rent several times over the past 11 years, but I've never seen such an emotional performance. Is he always that great? Were any of you there?
...Really? I can't stand Troy and everything about his performance. His Reprise is mediocre at best and his acting is terrible. It must have either been a good night for him, or I'm just really picky. I've seen him 4 times and I've disliked him every time.
I've seen Troy three times in the role and have been considerably underwhelmed each time. His voice is pleasant and he starts out nicely, but I feel that he slips a little with each progressive scene. Honestly, I've never seen a more boring ICYR. No emotion, no inflexion, just completely by-the-book (or score) singing. I keep hearing great reports of him and am constantly shocked ... I mean, no one ever really made a big deal about Mark Ford and he was out-of-this-world.
A little off-topic, but for anyone who feels underwhelmed with the broadway production in general, I highly recommend checking out the national tour. I just saw it Wednesday night and the amount of heart and soul everyone was putting into it was quite refreshing. 100 times more satisfying than what's at the Nederlander.
So, that was the Drowsy Chaperone. Oh, I love it so much. I know it's not a perfect show...but it does what a musical is supposed to do. It takes you to another world, and it gives you a little tune to carry with you in your head for when you're feeling blue. Ya know?
