T’was the night before Opening and all through the theatre, Not a person was still, please don’t break that mirror, The cast was all nervous, “Opening Night Jitters”, It would almost be time for Gin and some Bitters.
The techies were checking the computers all night, The screens were not in sync.......what a horrible plight, At last they were working, wipe the sweat from your brow, With these problems resolved, Andrew prayed for a “Cash Cow.”
Look there is Fosco, did you see the double chin? No, that is just Michael, can’t you tell by his grin?
Michael plays Fosco, a menacing, seedy bloke, He struts about, commanding clout, Someone you’d like to choke.
A beau brummel, bon vivere, and Ron Jeremy look alike, I wouldn’t want to meet up with him, In a dark alley late one night!!!
But, he can be a very likeable buffoon, Who is sweet and charming, but a bit of a loon, He will wine you and dine you and make you believe, Oh look, a white rat is running up his sleeve!!
Her name is Beatrice, and she really has trained, To be Michael’s co-star, now, now she’s got fame, She’s grown to love Michael, you can tell right away, She hangs on his neck, and doesn’t obey, Rats will urinate usually at will, Quick someone, please, clean up the spill!!!
Then there is Glyde, another sneaky pretend, A snake in the grass, a cohort and friend?? But Fosco will sink as most villains do, So watch out dear Count, Glyde just might be after you!!
The singers were practicing their lines so to speak, The dancers were twirling, so light on their feet, Poor Michael looked stuffed from his fat suit so tight, And Beatrice looked calm, in her cage for the night.
Maria and the girls were decked out in gowns, Their corsets so tight, you could tell by their frowns, And Adam the Artist was betwixt and between, These lovely maidens were a true artist’s dream!
The main characters were practicing their lines like the pros, and Count Fosco was down on his luck, That rat kept upstaging him every time she was on, and made him look like a real schmuck!
Poor Trevor Nunn had to ready his flock, ‘Cause time was a tickin’ And soon the curtain would go up.
Celebrities were entering two by two, The critics were all about, but what can you do? It’s opening night, the show must go on, And after it’s over, it’s party till dawn!
Michael and Maria were taking their bows, With standing ovations abound, For they led the cast with gusto and pride, With dedication so highly profound.
Winning a Tony would be such a thrill, for everyone in the cast, All the hard work and time put in, Would finally pay off at last.
In June the answers will be revealed, The hopefuls are all sitting tight, And the winner of the Best Play is announced, It goes to WOMAN IN WHITE
I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. It was written before I saw the play on Broadway.
