AHHHH! As everyone says, I never thought I would do this. I'm a 16 year alto girl with a very low belting range and a very high head voice, but it gets a little bumpy in the middle. Auditions for West Side Story at my High School are coming up soon, and I'm usually exceppent with choosing audition songs, but this has me stumped. I'd like to do something a little more unusual so...
No Defying Gravity or anything of that kind
Thank you SO much in advance.

"Where You Are" or "I Do Miracles" from Kiss of the Spider Woman
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
This is just an idea, but if you're going to Maria or Anita you might want to think about doing a song from a different musical that those same actors (from the West Side Story movie) played. Wait--that sounded a little confusing.
For Example: If you're going for Maria, you might want to pick a song from a musical that Marnie Nixon (the singing voice for Maria) song for. She sang the songs for Eliza Doolittle in the My Fair Lady movie as well as Anna in "The King and I" among others.
Rita Moreno played Anita in the movie, so you could also look into other parts that she has played (I know she played Tuptim in The King and I, but I can't think of anything else at the moment).
I don't know if this would work or not, but it's always something I thought I would do if I ever auditioned for West Side. Hope it helps
"No thoughts within her head, but thoughts of joy.....no dreams within her heart but dreams of love."
for Anita: Spanish Rose from Birdie - it might work if you're not, because hey, chances are youre playing one. Another Chita song like "Spiderwoman". "What did I Ever See in Him" could work.
for Maria, if I loved you would work.
Rosencrantz: "Be happy - if you're not even HAPPY what's so good about surviving? We'll be all right. I suppose we just go on."
- from Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
But seriously, for Anita, I think that's a gr8 idea about doing a song that maybe Chita did in a different show - like the Rink - Wallflower or even Bye Birdie - What did I ever see in him
If you're going for Maria - love the idea about I Could Have Danced All Night - similar range to Maria.
