I am taking my friend as a birthday gift since we are both big fans of the show. I am very excited, after years of waiting, to finally see a live production of tick tick boom. The music is leagues above the score for Rent. Colin Hanlon is great, I remember him as Mark the first time I ever saw Rent on Broadway.
I saw the matinée today and thought it was great. Glad I went. traffic coming backed sucked donkey &%^#, but otherwise.... Performances were great Wilson Cruz could have been a little louder
I ended up not being able to go last weekend, and I think that was the only possible time I could have gone. I'm still going to try, but, it's not likely.
I went to the matinee yesterday, Sunday. The renovated Westport Playhouse is a jewel!
I enjoyed the performance but would have to say that I was not blown away by it, as I expected to be. The settings, costumes, direction, were all fine, but there was so little fire in the performance. To be fair, because this was a captioned performance - the electronic crawl was on the right side of the proscenium and very unobtrusive- the average age in this audience appeared to be 97. But they were not necessarily a "blue-haired" audience - when the performance merited strong approval, they were appreciative.
The two men (Wilson Cruz as Michael and Colin Hanlon as Jon) seemed to be very under-miked: the good news is that meant you could hear the quality of their voices, but the bad news is that there were times when the musicians overpowered them a little. Pearl Sun as Susan had the one OMG! moment singing "Come to Your Senses," of course.
It felt a little too pat - I know, the book is hardly Shakespeare - but Hanlon seemed a little too likeable and good natured. I didn't feel the neurotic suffering of someone really not knowing what to do with his life. I kept wishing he would deliver his songs rather than just sing them, give them a dramatic feeling. Some of my favorite songs just dropped like stones - 30/90, Green Green Dress and Sunday.
I am glad I saw this, but I came home and listened to the cd. Maybe I just love the original cast too much.
Just got back from seeing this in Westport last night. I have to say that I agree completely with someone who said there was no energy. With the original off-Broadway cast, there was this spark, this energy, it even shone through on the cast recording. Something about this production didn't quite click and I was really disappointed with it.
The cast was alright. I've never been a particular fan of Colin Hanlon's, and he turned out an OK performance. I have yet to see him in a role where he's capable of carrying a show. Pearl Sun was also just OK. Her "Come to Your Senses" was pretty good but some parts I felt as if she was yelling at me. Wilson Cruz was good, but something was missing. Maybe I found that there was a lack of chemistry between the three of them, but even in solo scenes and numbers something just wasn't working.
Oh and don't get me started on the sound design. If I wasn't familiar with the score I'd have no idea what they were singing through half of it. The friend I was with didn't hear a lot of it, and I heard other audience members complaining about it at times as well. A lot of really good lyrics were completely drowned out.
Best number of the night was "Therapy." They did a great job with that. Other than that the "BIG" numbers, "30/90," "Louder than Words," and even "Come to Your Senses" fell flat in my opinion.
I will say this, however: the audience ate it up. Maybe it was just me. Maybe I'm too attached to the OOBC, but I don't think I'll be recommending this production to too many people. Oh well.
Yes!! I saw it in Westport opening night! It was amazing! I never saw the original one and it was such a great experience. Rodney Hicks who was in the original broadway cast of RENT in ensemble and the closing cast playing Benny was there! I'm good friends with him so I went to the cast party after! You should definitely check it out if you live near Westport! The cast is really talented as well.
