After "It is either Valjean or Javert" the lights got dark and the actor crossed to the bridge (which the audience hadn't seen previously) and was hooked up to the fly system (he had a harness under his costume).
For the suicide, he jumps and the lights turn only on him and he is suspended in the air as the bridge rushes off the stage. It was pretty neat when it worked. But when it didn't, the actor looked more like he was flying.
LES MISERABLES would heavily suffer if it doesn't focus on the characters and, more importantly, the plot.
FriedrichVT - I think you are right. My recollection is a very dark stage, and not the very prominent whirlpool effect. Just to clarify - it isn't the "special effects" aspect that I missed but the clear death/desperation that I thought was somewhat missing this time. I adore Norm Lewis' voice, although I think he seems a rather merciful pursuer.
