Its not the highschool productions that are good in my city, its the young peoples production companys that do such an amazing job. My company just finished HAIR, and we did 6 shows...all of them were to 1000 people every night. Last year, they did Les Mis, and next year they are doing TOMMY and The Apple Tree. I love both of these productions.
Other companies have put on these things since the 1980's and they are also so well done. I completely agree with you Eponine about how talented younger people are. I can't believe the talent in my city in Saskatchewan, and thats such a small place.

it depends on how much effort (and $) is put into them. i just played Dolly in my high school's production of Hello Dolly, and we rented proffesional costumes, hired a proffesional choreographer, used a fabulous pit orchestra, and had set people build us a grand staircase for the harmonia gardens restaurant. i felt very proffesional. but other school shows i've seen have had no set, 1 costume per student, and a piano. just depends on the school

My local high school (which I didn't go to, but that's another story) has a consistently excellent theater program, especially on the technical side of things. The sets, lighting, etc. are always great. My town is small enough that talent levels fluctuate a bit, but it's always at a good level. They did a fine job with Company this year, and John Kander actually went to see their production of Steel Pier a few years ago.

The high school I actually went to wasn't quite at that level, but part of the problem was that it was so academically oriented that all extracurriculars (sports, theater, etc.) suffered in comparison. Still, I was pretty disappointed I could never be in pit because they never had a viola part. *sigh*

Rentaholic, for our one-act festival you can do either plays or musicals but the catch is that the show can only be 45 minutes long. That is only one of the many rules that go along with the festival. But it is really an awesome experience. You get exposed to all kinds of high school theater across the state, good or bad, and some even in your own backyard that you would have otherwise never known about. Actually the MIFA is responsible for giving me two of my best friends here at college. We used to compete against each other but now we love each other and it's nice to know there is someone else around you who's had the same experience. If you want to know more about the festival or anything PM me.

oh high school! :) I graduated 10 years ago, but when I was in school we not only had our annual spring shows which while I was there we did Grease, A Chorus Line and Hair, but we also had SING. This was a huge thing in NY (Brooklyn) it was bigger in the 60's and 70's .....this was such a great thing! It was the SR/Fresh vs JR/Sophs, the show was written, directed, produced everything by students, it was the best time ever! we created shows, script, music (usually songs we changed the word to), lyrics, art and sets (which were so amazing and huge!, we had a great stage and were able to make huge back drops that could be lowered onto the stage..... then in Decembers we would compete and were judged. My group won twice Fresh and Soph year, Jr we lost and Sr year we tied, we hated that! :) anyway, it was better than any production of Grease, A chorus line, etc.. becuase it was original and our own!

There is a movie called SING made in the 80's I think.. not totally how it was, but on the right track :)

It was a great experience and the shows were very good if I do say so myself.. :)

If I still had my scanner working I'd show you some pictures from my high school shows....My high school is definetly comparable to broadway. We have a huge theatre with a nice sized fly space, new equipment for the tech, we rent most of our sets, so they look extremely professional, and work on our shows for months before the actual performances with outstanding talent and dedication for the students, with work from an amazing staff. Everyone is really proud to be part of our shows so they put forth the effort. It's a public high school so it doesn't get much in the way of funds, only what we can raise. The show's that I've been apart of have been H2$, 42nd Street, Funny Girl, and we just finished a 2 week run of Me and My Girl. We're def up to broadway standards :)

Has anyone heard of Walnut Hill, in Greater Boston? Anyone go there or anything? It has a summer theater program I got accepted to and I'm excited!

heh. Not Ohio, New Jersey. Ah well.

I'm Gail and Les Miserables and Footloose are among my favorite musicals. I have been in Les Miserables as both Eponine and Cosette, and in Footloose as Ariel and Rusty. I have also been in Fame! as Carmen Diaz. I was in Annie: the 20th aniversary at only 10 years old as Molly.

I have never seen a high school show that is at all comprable to broadway, but I have seen some amazingly talented highschoolers in school productions. PLUS many broadway people start out in high school shows and I have recently heard of a couple cases of people being scouted for broadway in high school productions. Don't know if this is true or urban legend though. has anyone else heard of cases like this?
