Communism is the solution.

No, really. It is.

re: John Lahr on 'Guys & Dolls'  Mar 7 2009, 02:52:04 AM
...Did anybody happen to read the terrible rant review in the Times earlier this week? It was at the top of the arts section. I'm starting to get sick of their pompous rant reviews that only cause more pain to the industry.
re: What's happening to Musical Theater Writers? (adapters)  Mar 4 2009, 01:44:52 AM
My big question is...
What is happening to non-adapted musicals?
Any successful ones in recent history?
I fear musical theatre has steered towards adaptations because they need a selling point and target audience. This greatly detracts from the art, and kind of frustrates me.

Don't get me wrong... there are some clever adaptations out there that I appreciate.

re: Sweeney Tood Blood Questions  Mar 4 2009, 01:33:59 AM
When we made gallons of blood for Sweeney we used a soap/strawberry syrup/chocolate syrup mixture that washed right out. When desired, this would also allow us to fling the blood as we pulled the razor away from the neck. I've tried numerous mixtures over the years, and nothing works as well as professionally made stage blood, but the Sweeney blood comes in a close second.
re: Favorite 'Entire town singing' Songs?  Feb 28 2009, 05:59:40 PM
I'm surprised there aren't more "Typical Day" from Li'l Abner fans. I love the effective establishment of stock characters.
re: Need Advice on selecting a roles.  Feb 9 2009, 08:59:53 AM
Here's the plan: you do 1776, I'll take your role in SITPWG. I've been in 1776 already and the soldier is a dream role, so hows about we work it out that way?

In all honesty, take the role in Sunday, no doubt.

re: THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, the musical  Feb 8 2009, 02:26:36 AM
I think the key to this becoming a good musical would be fantastic choreography with the feeling of a freak show.
re: Unified Audition Packages  Feb 7 2009, 03:19:57 AM
Unified Auditions are basically cattle calls with a boatload of companies, as well as actors, represented. Some require equity affiliation, others just about anyone can get into.

The audition package is the material you perform at the audition.

For short, unified audition package.

Unified Audition Packages  Feb 6 2009, 05:39:25 PM
Are you going to any? What's the package?

I'll be going to StrawHats. Haven't settled on the song yet, but I'm thinking A New World with a monologue from One for the Road by Pinter.

For those of you curious why I ask, I assimilated an audition repertoire sourcebook for musical theatre a couple of years ago that I'm looking to update. If you're interested in seeing it, lemme know!

The overture, I believe.
re: DO RE MI questions  Feb 2 2009, 09:50:17 PM
Would you happen to know the dramatic function of "Make Someone Happy?" Or what is the relationship between Wheeler and (insert name I forget here) at this point?
DO RE MI questions  Feb 2 2009, 12:06:40 AM
I'd like to add some of Wheeler's songs into my audition book, but I really have no idea of the show's plot or Wheeler's relation to the plot. If anyone has the libretto, I can definitely repay the favor, or if someone could give me a brief synopsis I'd be simply delighted.

Thanks.

re: Sweeny Todd Debacle  Nov 12 2007, 03:36:21 AM
Pick up a book on directing. Look up the term "extrinsic interpretation."
Learn about Peter Brook's "A Midsummer Nights Dream." Think Shakespeare would have thought that was how his show should be done? No. Was it an artistic masterpiece? Yes.

MFA Directing Programs?  Nov 1 2007, 12:35:38 AM
Hey I'm in search of a comprehensive list of MFA Directing programs. Any idea of where I might find this other than by doing a google search? Anyone out there with an MFA in Directing that might be able to guide me a bit in the search?

re: Musicals with socio-political messages  Aug 11 2007, 01:53:09 AM
To be a bit more specific, I'm looking for material suitable for a group of college students to perform. The topics addressed would preferably pertain to our generation, running off the question posed in Tick Tick... of "What does it take to wake up a generation?" Any voice part or dance requirement is suitable, as I'm intending to find material that suits the wide variety of students I'll be directing.
Musicals with socio-political messages  Aug 11 2007, 12:40:37 AM
More specifically than musicals in general (I'm sure we can name them all from 1776 to Zanna Don't), I'm looking for songs that would be appropriate in a revue setting. Any suggestions?

re: Do You Want a FAITHFUL Movie Adaptation or Not?  Aug 11 2007, 12:29:33 AM
The message meant to be conveyed by the author of the text is most important. So if making sacrifices in order for the general population to understand and appreciate that message better, then more power to you.
