The Wetumpka Depot Players are stirring up a big pot of home cooked humor this June with the community theatre debut of GRITS the Musical. Based on the wildly popular books, GRITS Guide to Live, Putting on the GRITS and Friends are FOREVAH, the material is Steel Magnolias meets Southern Belle.
"When GRITS author and Alabama native, Deborah Ford visited Wetumpka last fall, several folks around town told her about the Depot and our reputation for doing wonderful work. She called me and visited with me at the theatre and told me about the musical, GRITS," said Depot Executive Director and GRITS director, Kristy Meanor. "I believe that some things are just meant to be and my chance encounter with this delightfully colorful author sold me on her show."
The musical is a Summer Season Extra for the Depot Players 35th Anniversary Season along with the Jessica Meuse concert on June 6.
Based on Deborah's books, the musical is written and adapted by Erica McGee and is a series of original songs and monologues from the books. Erica, a North Carolina actor had come off tour from a show and ran across Deborah's book in a gift shop and thought it would make a great musical. The material covers everything from Sweet Tea (the house wine of the South), road trips with your best girlfriends, as well as a song and monologue about the love/hate relationship women have with girdles! The original musical numbers cover a wide range of styles from Country ( I Hope Dolly Parton Lives Forever) to Blues ( Don't You Hold Me So Tight) to an old time Gospel medley that will have audiences singing along.
The Depot has assembled a stellar cast of their own GRITS regulars to make up the cast. Adrian Borden, Kim Mason, Desirae Lewis and Cindy Veazey bring to life the characters and music of GRITS the Musical.
The show plays June 15,16, 18, 19, 20 at 7:30pm and Sunday June 21 at 2pm. Tickets are $12/$15 and can be purchased by calling the box office at 868.1440 or wetumpkadepot.com. The Wetumpka Depot Theatre is located at 300 S Main in historic downtown Wetumpka.
